Psychopomp Work : escorting of souls to the afterlife

crossing dead spirits, psychopomp, ghost removalA psychopomp is a guide, whose primary function is to escort souls to the afterlife, but they can also serve as guides through the various transitions of life. The term originates from the Greek words pompos (conductor or guide) and psyche (breath, life, soul, or mind). Stories of psychopomps are widespread throughout the mythological tales, religious texts, sacred narratives, and real-life stories of people around the world.

Severe grief or trauma at the time of death can leave a soul confused, angry or disoriented. Rather than moving into the light these suffering beings remain on the earth plane attaching themselves to places or even individuals. People often refer to these as ghosts or hauntings. I am able to help transition (cross) these spirits from a place of love, compassion and a true desire to help end their suffering here and escort them to the afterlife so they can be reunited with friends and family members on the other side.

Many cultures and various cosmologies of death and depict compassionate beings that guide souls through the death process of crossing over. There are numerous creatures, spirits, angels, or deities in many religions whose responsibility is to escort newly deceased souls from Earth to the afterlife. Their role is not to judge the deceased, but simply to provide safe passage. Classic examples of psychopomps are the Norse female Valkyries and the Goddess Freya, The Greek God Hermes, the Egyptian God Anubis, the Goddess Epona who was primarily worshiped by the Guals of Italy and France, Archangel Michael from Christian and Roman Catholic tradition. Many cultures also portray animals such as ravens, owls, horses, fox and dogs as psychopomps. These deities or spiritual beings are the compassionate ones who guide the soul on its journey after death. Shamanic practitioners are humans who are oftentimes also called upon to act as a psychopomp in order guide a soul as it leaves this life and enters the afterlife in a calm and peaceful transition into the next chapter of their existence.

I have been doing psychopomp work since before I even knew the term or definition of the word. Although I was fully aware that I was helping to "cross souls over to the other side" it wasn't until I started my Shamanic training that I realized that I was doing psychopomp work and carried the mark of the psychopomp. Once I learned that, everything made perfect sense -- I then understood why souls would frequently come to me seeking my help. It was because they knew I had the ability, desire and compassion to do so.

When people are unprepared to face death, they often need additional assistance crossing over. They may not be aware of the fact that beings are waiting on the other side to help them, or they may be too preoccupied or anxious to acknowledge such assistance. This can leave people lost and confused, even angry at times, or can create a situation where they may not even know they have passed and instead attempt to continue on with their human existence instead of crossing over. This is most often the case when people have died in a sudden accident, have committed suicide, died under heavy medication and/or overdose or where addictions may be involved. It is increasingly also the case with the growing number of people who are emotionally unprepared to face their own death, particularly in the Western world where many have lost touch with the dying process. This is where the modern-day psychopomp plays an active role by helping the deceased find their way. A great deal of healing can be done even after death and powerful transformations can occur for the deceased as well as their loved ones.

Assisting a lost soul in the afterlife to heal and move forward on their journey is an incredibly powerful, touching and rewarding experience. It is a beautiful gift to give your loved one who has passed. If you know someone who left this world in a tragic or unexpected manner or if you constantly feel their presence, hear them or dream of them frequently, they may be in need of assistance crossing over.
